I want to tell you about the novel "The Catсher in the Rye" by J. D. Jerom. It was published in 1951. This book talks us about the short period of life of Holden Caulfield. Holden is 17 and he is not usual boy for that time. He is thoughtless, absolutely irresponsible and sometimes behave as little child. He thinks that all around him is annoying: his classmates, the headteacher, the subjects and not even not the material things but also all people' s values, their worldview. He sees only phoniness in the adult world. In the beginning of the novel the main character and the author lives in a sanatorium. Then Holden starts his story about his previous year' s adventures. He had been studying at Pencey Prep School but has been expelled for academic failure. He says that there are a lot of boring subjects there and he has only one favorite - English. His roommate Spencer has a date with the pretty girl that was childhood friend of Holden. And also Spencer asks Holden to write an essay for him, because he is very good at it. Holden agreed, but writes quite odd essay about the glove of his younger brother Allie who died of leukemia. Holden was jealous of her friend that' s why he wrote this essay. Spencer was angry with him. After their quarrel Holden goes to New York and meets with some people that also annoy him. Over the whole novel he wonders where the ducks go when the lake in Central Park gets frozen. This question shows his immature, his child curiosity. But he also describes his main dream. He wants to catch little boys and girls in the field of rye to not to fall them off s cliff. The field symbolizes child' s innocence and the cliff - adult's world full of phoniness and lie.
