He went to hospital.

2). She got a degree in Engineering when she (had) studied for four years. She got a degree in Engineering after she had studied for four years.

3). He worked as a sales assistant when he (had) got a new job as a car salesman. He worked as a sales assistant before he had got a new job as a car salesman.

4). Ann and David (were) had been engaged for five months when they got married. Ann and David had been engaged for five months before they got married.

5). Mr. Harris (was) had been sick for many weeks when he went to hospital. Harris had been sick for many weeks before he went to hospital.
