1) The UK is situated off the northwestern coast of mainland Europe. 2) I think the UK is called "an island state" because it comprises the whole of the island of Great Britain. 3) Ireland is also situated in the British Isles. 4) English is spoken across the UK, but it is not the only native official language. There are also Welsh in Wales, Gaelic and Scots in Scotland, Irish and Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland and Cornish in Cornwall, England. 5) Around 65.57 million people live Britain nowadays. 6) The Union Jack is the national flag of the United Kingdom. The flag combines aspects of three older national flags: the red cross of St. George for the Kingdom of England, the white saltire of St. Andrew for Scotland (which two were united in the first Union Flag), and the red saltire of St. Patrick to represent Ireland.
