The Second World War began when Princess Elizabeth was thirteen years old. She and her younger sister Margaret were evacuated to Windsor. There were also plans for the evacuation of princesses to Canada, but as is known, their mother, Queen Elizabeth, said: "Children can not go anywhere without me, I will never leave the king, and the king will never leave his country!" In 1940 the princess made her first radio talk during the BBC Children's Hour in which she turned to evacuees. At thirteen, she met Philippe Mountbatten, a cadet of the Dortmund Naval School, the son of a Greek prince Andrew, and fell in love with him. They constantly corresponded during his service in the Royal Navy.

In 1945, Elizabeth was able to persuade his father that he would allow her to make their direct contribution to victory. She joined the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she was known as No. 230873 Lieutenant Elizabeth Windsor, and studied for the driver. This was the first case in the history of the royal family when a woman served in a military unit.
