He said that he would take part in the chess tournament. The engineer said the new machine had been installed in the laboratory. My father said that I could go to England for a year or two. The teacher said that he would never paint well.

The first part of the first is in Past Indefinite. That's why we can't use will in it.

The second part of the second sentence is Past Perfect Passive.

We use could in the second sentence because the first part of the sentence is in Past Indefinite.

The first part of the fourth sentence is in Past Indefinite. So we must use would.
