Необходимость преобразования каких-либо фактов в полезную информацию не является чем-то особенным на сегодняшний день. На протяжении всей истории люди считали важным облекать данные в более простые формы. Например, древние египтяне заметили отлив и прилив реки Нил и использовали эту информацию для прогнозирования годовых урожаев. Сегодня компьютеры преобразуют данные о земле и воде, что помогает фермерам в посевах сельскохозяйственных культур. Механические средства для расчета были разработаны и усовершенствованы в Европе, Азии и Америке на протяжении 17-19 веков.
