George Washington was born in Virginia into a planter's family. He learned to ride a horse, to hunt, shoot, sail and swim. Washington was the Commander in Chief of the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War. People respected him for his courage, honestly and wisdom. After the Revolutionary War Washington wanted to retire and live at Mount Vernon where he had a beautiful house and a big plantation. On April 30, 1789 Washington became the first President of the country. Abraham Lincoln was born in a poor farm family. Little Abe taught himself by reading the books he could get, such as the Bible, Aesop's "Fables" and "Robinson Crusoe". People liked young Abe Lincoln because he was a born storyteller. After the Indian War Lincoln walked home with an educated young lawyer. This new friend gave Abe advice to study law. In the year when he became the 16^th American President the Civil War began, so Lincoln had to lead the country through the four terrible years of war. In 1865 the North won the Civil War.
