It makes the adjective stronger, e. g. really nasty, really cold, so relieved.

2 horrible, musty, loud, moaning, cold, terrible, transparent, hooded, scared,

ghastly, vague, nasty, weird - all the adjectives make the story more colourful and attractive, etc.

Прирос к земле = I was roosted to the spot

Пришел в себя = I got myself together

Сердце замерло от ужаса = it struck tenor in my heart
