1. When I got to the cinema the film had started. Когда я попал в кино, фильм начался.

2. The teacher entered the classroom five minutes after the bell had rung.

Учитель вошел в класс через пять минут после того, как прозвенел звонок.

Past Simple (got, entered) употребляется для выражения однократного действия в прошлом.

Past Perfect (had started, had rung) употребляется для выражения действия, которое окончилось до определенного момента или другого действия в прошлом.
