When Mrs. Golan opened the door, her children were doing homework and her husband was reading the newspaper.

We used two verbs in Past Continuous to denote two past actions, which were simultaneously in progress when they were interrupted by another single action in the past. The latter action is denoted by the verb 'to open' used in Past Simple.
