Глагол to be (быть) в прошедшем простом времени имеет две формы: was (был/была) и were (были).

Was - употребляется с существительными в единственном числе;

Were - с существительными во множественном числе.

Для образования отрицания нужно поставить отрицательную частицу not после глаголов was или were.

Для того, чтобы задать вопрос, глаголы was и were нужно поставить перед подлежащим.

При выборе there was или there were смотрим на существительное, которое стоит после этих конструкций.
